Proposals for a problem-free wedding

Proposals for a problem-free wedding

From The Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas:

Planning a wedding is a major emotional and financial investment, and Better Business Bureau advises brides and grooms-to-be to prepare before selecting vendors for that special day. Every year, BBB receives hundreds of complaints about wedding services and suppliers.  Typical complaints concern contract disputes and failure on the part of the vendor to provide products or even show up for the wedding.

“Organizing a wedding involves orchestrating a symphony of vendors, and bridal expos can be a great one-stop shop to find all of the service providers you would need”, said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas.  “There is much to consider, however, so couples should take their time and do their research before signing on the dotted line.”

Meat cuts getting confusing new names

Meat cuts getting confusing new names

From Amanda HIll of Txagtalks.texasfarmbureau.org:

I came across a news story this morning from NBC’s Today Show that reported a group within the meat industry is moving toward renaming some of our favorite meat cuts in order to make them “more consumer-friendly.”

The group heading up the new meat monikers is the Uniform Retail Meat Identification Standards—URMIS, for short. They claim that consumers are confused by names of meats like rump roast, pork butt and others. So, to clarify the consumer’s choice of pork and beef, URMIS has suggested new names for more than 350 cuts in your local meat case.

What are some of the new meat monikers you might look for? If you’re planning on serving up a juicy pork chop for dinner, look instead for “Porterhouse chops,” “Ribeye chops” and “New York chops.”

ATM safety tips during holiday season...and every day

ATM safety tips during holiday season...and every day

From the Better Business Bureau of Central East  Texas:

With holiday shopping in full swing, many of us will be using our debit cards for transactions.  This is the reason many retailers have ATM machines in their place of business or an ATM machine is located nearby. Scammers can be found wherever transactions occur, and in this case, it’s no different.

“ATM’s are a great convenience, but they can compromise both your physical safety as well as increase your risk for identity theft”, said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas. “Reports of ATM robbery attempts and identity theft will typically increase this time of year.”

BBB provides the following tips on how to be safe when using an ATM machine along with some tips to protect yourself from being a victim of ATM skimming.

  • Pay close attention to the ATM and your surroundings.

Top 10 Cyber-Monday tips for shopping online

From the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas:

Every year, more people head online to get their holiday shopping done. It’s estimated that half of all American adults shopped for bargains on the Monday after Thanksgiving 2011, spending approximately $1.2 billion.

“The convenience and ease of shopping online has replaced the hassle of going to the store for many people,” said Mechele Agbayani Mills, president and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas. “Shopping online means avoiding the crowds, but it also opens the buyer up to attacks from scammers and hackers."

BBB offers the “Top 10 Online Shopping Tips” to help fight unscrupulous online retailers, scammers and hackers:

1. Protect your computer – A computer should always have the most recent updates installed for spam filters, anti-virus and anti-spyware software and a secure firewall.

2.
